The Sonrisa Feliz Hope Center is in an area at risk of environmental disasters, such as high winds and flooding, and struggles with poorly built homes, child labor, alcohol abuse, and domestic violence. Despite these challenges, area families feel blessed to have a global community of Child Champions who dedicate themselves to seeing the next generation grow and thrive. By listening to the specific needs of local children, these loving adults are equipped to provide them with individualized care, a chance to succeed, and hope for a better future.
Nicaragua has the smallest population in Central America yet occupies the largest land area. Roughly the size of the state of New York, Nicaragua has tropical lowlands and central mountains and is bordered by Honduras, the Caribbean Sea, Costa Rica, and the Pacific Ocean. Like Honduras, a large number of Nicaraguans are Mestizo (mixed Native American and European ancestry). Spanish is the official language, and less than 1% of the population speaks another language. Coffee is the main export followed by beef, gold, sugar, and peanuts. Nicaragua is the second poorest country in the Western Hemisphere after Haiti, and faces severe unemployment which forces many to leave the country each year in search of work.
